Whenever I am at a loss as to where to hike and shoot I come back to DIN DIN (Barron Falls) near Kuranda in Far North Qld.
In my early days as a landscape photographer, during my studies, I hunted and researched how on earth one could get down to the base of the falls and take photos. Much “Googling” later and after a couple of visits I was guided inadvertently by a goanna that I spotted over some railings. As I watched it disappear into the bush I saw what appeared to be a slightly worn track. A minute later I was walking down an old steep track carved out of the mountain some 100 yrs ago for the hydro station, feeling a little bit like Indiana Jones in dense rainforest vegetation...
Coming here to shoot during and after intense rainfall and seeing and hearing the falls is truly a humbling experience. Many times during and after shooting, soaked through to the skin with moisture and sweat. Jaw gaping open at what a truly magnificent sight is in front of me. This really is a place to come to find oneself and ask what life is all about.
Controversially for me, despite the many hundreds of photos I have of this falls and the many times I have been here I still don't feel I have captured it as it should be, for me. But that is the joy of being a photographer. The challenge is real but most enjoyable.
